Layers of the Soul

“Two thirds of the earth’s surface is ocean, and all we can see of it with the naked eye is the surface:  the skin.            We hardly know anything about what’s beneath the skin."                                                                                                                                                                                        -Haruki Murakami, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle

“The soul unfolds itself, like a lotus of countless petals."                                                                                                                                                                                           - Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet

“You have so many layers, that you can peel away a few and everyone’s so shocked or impressed that you’re baring your soul, while to you it’s nothing, because you know you’ve twenty more layers to go.”                                                                                                                                                     -Craig Thompson, Carnet de Voyage

“Sometimes it takes great suffering to pierce the soul and open it up to greatness."                                                                                                                                                                                         - Jocelyn Murray

What lies beneath…the struggles, history, journey, truths learned, lessons repeated….surface vs depth..the winding path we are all on….exploring our true selves… boundaries, road blocks, finding your centre, archetypes and being true to your vision.   How our paths weave, intertwine, and are all interconnected.

This series of 20 pieces.. each 10” x 10”… explores different aspects of this theme.  Mediums include encaustic and mixed media:  collage, shellac, pigment sticks, pan pastels, inks, stencils…each encapsulating an aspect of the complexity and depth of our souls.
